Title: “Io-island Portable Shrine Project”
Medium: Portable Shrine, Cleaning tools, video etc.
Year: 2010
The site of the project, Io-Jima is an island with multi-sided history, such as history of underground Christianity, coalmine, and today a popular site for tourism. Due to its history, there are various religious sites in the island although most of these places are left abandoned due to the decreasing population and aging of the community. The project proposes a few events by combining the characteristics and issues of the community. The residents are invited to clean the path to religious sites. For providing an incentive to do so, the artist creates a potable shrine to carry to the site. During the residency period, a few different projects were conducted, and one event still continues by local residents as their annual religious ceremony.
